Free resources

Some resources are free of charge but can take lots of time, like the excellent Art of the Float podcast which has nearly 300 episodes. We enjoyed listening to every one of them, and they are great for long car journeys. The conversations they inspired were as valuable as the content they offer, and we still use tips we picked up from Dylan and the crew to this day. Thanks guys!

Float tank solutions also created their Daily Solutions podcasts which are more bite sized, free and again very much worth listening to (Hi Graham and Ashkahn!). Plus they publish a bunch of free resources including an annual industry report which is a treasure trove of useful data.

Valuable knowledge

Which brings us to the resources which have a cost associated with them.

Float tank solutions sell some great information packs about building a float centre.  Much of their content is specific to the United States, and although some of the principles are universal, the UK is very different in many ways from regulations through to marketing.

These information packs originally struck us as expensive, but as we navigated our way through the process of building a successful float centre, we came to realise that true knowledge gained from first hand experience is very valuable. That kind of knowledge is worth investing in because it can save you an awful lot of money.

How can investing in knowledge save you money? Because you don’t know what you don’t know. And it’s those unknown unknowns which can bite you in the bum. Some mistakes during the build process only become apparent after opening, and by that time they are either impossible or very expensive to rectify. We can help you foresee and avoid those kind of mistakes.

Float a lot

Other float centres are a great source of information. It’s a good idea to float in as many different places as you can. You will see things you like, things you don’t like, and start to form an idea of how you want your float centre to be.

Plus floating regularly will ensure you embody the benefits of floating, and will help get you through the challenges of planning and building your own float centre.

Be sure to try a lot of different float environments from different manufacturers – all float tanks are not alike. The quality of float they give varies a lot, as does reliability and durability.

Once you have done some research and have some outline knowledge, then you may be better informed to be able to ask specific questions of other float centre owners when you visit them. Be open and honest with them that you are planning to open a centre – it is generally a very supportive industry. But also be aware that they may not have much time on the day as they’ll be busy running the centre!

Some things to start thinking about

There are a lot of things to consider when planning your float centre. It can seem overwhelming, but don’t panic – take it one step at a time and break things down into manageable chunks. Focusing just on the build for the moment, some of the key things to consider include:

• Sound and vibration mitigation methods and detailing
• Heating of the float rooms and other areas to maximise customer comfort
• Ventilation, especially in the float rooms to control temperature and humidity
• Insulation to make sure your energy bills are manageable and you conform to building regulations
• Lighting, for atmosphere, ease of effective cleaning, and emergency lighting systems for power cut
• Electrical and data wiring, including for float tank controls and fire detection and alert systems
• Building Layout for optimum customer experience and minimum sound disruption
• Storage to encompass all the stuff involved such as towels, salt, and cleaning equipment
• Plumbing, especially enough flow, pressure, and quantity of hot water for the showers
• Salt and water resistance of materials and finishes – Epsom salt gets everywhere and destroys a surprisingly wide array of materials!
