Intellectual curiosity
John Lilly, a pioneering neuroscientist, psychoanalyst and writer, is best known for his remarkable work in consciousness exploration and the development of the float tank. His journey into the realms of consciousness is marked by innovative research, personal challenges and significant contributions to both science and psychology.
John Cunnigham Lilly was born on 6th January 1915, in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
He grew up in a family that encouraged intellectual curiosity, and although his father was keen for him to enter a career within banking, Lilly was far too inspired by the many scientific and technological advancements happening around the world, which ultimately led him to pursue his fascinating interest in physics, biology and neurophysiology.
Lilly attended the California Institute of Technology, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1938. He later continued his studies embarking on a Medical Degree at the University of Pennsylvania, where he successfully graduated in 1942.
His earlier education focused on physiology and medicine, which became the cornerstone for his later work in consciousness. After World War II, Lilly embarked on invaluable work to set about studying the structure of the brain, which he suggested was “The most complex and amazing part of the universe yet discovered“.
Lilly decided to form an experiment utilising electrodes, so that he could discover what was happening within the brain itself. Although this is now modernised and deemed as a common practice, back then it was mostly unheard of.
Exploring sensory deprivation
Lilly’s interest into consciousness really took off in the 1940’s when he began studying the effects of sensory deprivation. He was mostly intrigued by how the brain processes sensory information, and was curious as to what could possibly happen if he sought to isolate sensory stimuli altogether.
During 1954, Lilly designed the first float tank whilst working at the National Institute of Mental Health.
His initial goal was to explore how isolation from external stimuli could lead to different mental states, potentially unlocking new avenues of perception and awareness. Furthermore, he strived to understand the brain’s functioning in a controlled environment, examining how sensory deprivation influenced cognitive processes, including the effects it could have on anxiety and stress.
The human biocomputer
Lilly began numerous experiments with the float tank himself, spending extended periods in isolation. He reported profound experiences that led him to explore altered states of consciousness, including lucid dreaming and out-of-body experiences, widely known and recognised today within the fields of psychology, psychiatry and spirituality.
In 1968, Lilly published ‘Programming and Metaprogramming in the Human Biocomputer‘. This book outlined Lilly’s theories on the mind and consciousness, introducing concepts such as biocomputers and metaprogramming. The human biocomputer referring to “the human brain and nervous system”, and metaprogramming linking to “the conscious ability to observe, alter and rewrite one’s own internal mental programmes, beliefs and habitual reactions”. This book particularly marked the significant departure from more traditional psychological theories, and reflected his interest in the intersection between science and spirituality.
In 1970, Lilly published ‘The Centre of the Cyclone‘. In this influential book, Lilly described his experiences in the float tank and his interactions with various states of consciousness. He introduced the concept of ‘interfacing’ with different realms of consciousness, suggesting that the mind could access deeper levels of awareness through sensory deprivation.
During this time, Lilly combined this work with the study of large brained mammals especially dolphins. Lilly believed that dolphins were possibly as smart as human beings, which resulted in him advocating for a deeper understanding of inter-species relationships, communication and intelligence. In 1972 he was involved in the creation of the US Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Pushing boundaries
Lilly faced considerable scepticism from the scientific community, especially as he was challenging conventional scientific paradigms, embracing unconventional methodologies and pushing the boundaries of human knowledge.
His ideas about consciousness and the potential for the mind to access altered states were often dismissed as unscientific. This criticism did not deter him from his quest, but rather fuelled his desire to apply the scientific method to these phenomena. Lilly’s explorations contributed to the broader field of trans-personal psychology, which integrates spiritual experiences into psychological understanding. As a result, his ideas have influenced many therapists and researchers exploring the mind’s potential.
Lilly’s journey was not without personal challenge. His explorations into consciousness led him to confront his own mental health and emotional struggles.
He battled with depression and the implications of his discoveries which undoubtedly had an affect on his personal life and relationships.
Foundations of the float industry
Despite these challenges, Lilly’s work has laid the foundation for floatation therapy, which has gained significant popularity over the years throughout the world, as a trusted relaxation and therapeutic practice. Throughout its evolution, scientific studies have served to validate its benefits, particularly in relation to its impact on stress reduction, pain management, and sleep quality.
Various studies found that floating lowers cortisol levels, promotes relaxation, and can even enhance cognitive performance. For example, one landmark study carried out in 2014, revealed that floatation significantly reduced the symptoms of anxiety and depression within its participants. As a result, such findings have contributed to the growing acceptance of floatation therapy in clinical settings, with therapists now incorporating it into treatment plans, to help alleviate various health conditions.

A powerful legacy
John Lilly passed away on 30th September 2001, but his legacy lives on through the continued exploration of consciousness and the therapeutic use of float tanks. His work remains a pivotal point of reference in discussions about the mind, consciousness and the potential for human experience. He truly believed that “the most profound changes happen when we step out of our comfort zones and challenge our familiar ways of thinking”.
Lilly’s contributions have not only advanced our understanding of the mind, but have also paved the way for new therapeutic modalities that continue to resonate in contemporary psychology and wellbeing.
